Work Life – Alicja Fatla

Alicja Fatla, Document Controller at Meinhardt, 41, lives in St Albans with her husband Klaudiusz

My Alarm goes off… Multiple times. I set it for 6am, but often snooze three or four times. I wash my hair, put on my make-up and walk to St Albans station to get my train to London.

I’m responsible for … Supporting projects, engineering and operations, and maintaining existing records throughout the project lifecycle as well as assisting in retrieval of records. I provide document management support to the Project team by understanding project requirements and recommending effective filing methods, file structure and assisting with management of project documentation. I also support and administer document work flows within the Electronic Document Management Systems.

I got the job … I graduated with a Masters in Econometrics and Computer Science in 2001. I helped one of my tutors with his Business Consulting Company as an Office Manager. I moved to the UK in 2007 and worked as a Document Controller and Admin Team Leader. My previous manager, one of ex Atelier Ten directors convinced me to join Meinhardt and I have never regretted this decision.

My typical day … Starts with making a tea and then going through emails. I am extremely busy because I provide support to all engineering teams (structural, civils, facades and MEP). I currently work on 20+ projects and I am managing all Marriott projects. Lunch is leftovers from dinner the night before and sometimes I read a book. In the afternoon I receive lots of requests to forward/issue our documentation to the Client or Design Team using various EDM websites. As a result of multiple requests I learnt to prioritise my tasks and I always try to provide the most satisfactory support.

The worst part of my job … Dealing with over 50 emails almost every day. I am very ambitious and hate when I need to leave something for the next day.

The best part of my job … Is my team of five. They are so much fun to work with every day.

After work … I might meet friends in London and we go to our favourite The Piano Works, to listen to live music. Otherwise Klaudiusz and I eat together meal at home prepared by whoever gets back home first and we watch our favourite TV series (Silent Witness, Shetland, Spiral, Homeland) or anything what we find interesting on Netflix. I also take a quick lesson of French on Duolingo and try to be asleep by midnight.

My Plan B: Photographer

I have been taking pictures especially portraits since 2000 and I love my four different cameras and various lenses. Taking pictures of people is always a lot of fun and I met many wonderful women when I was doing it in Poland.
