Meinhardt were commissioned by LH Scotland Ltd to provide Transport Consultancy services in support of a new luxury Hotel and Pod complex at Calderstones, Midlothian. The development includes a 102 bedroom hotel, spa and unique indoor/outdoor swimming pool with a further 38 accommodation pods on the grounds of the hotel.

The site is located off of the A702, close to the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass, allowing easy access from Edinburgh City Centre and Edinburgh Airport.

Meinhardt supported the scheme through the preparation of technical work required to discharge a series of conditions placed upon the planning application for the development. This included providing evidence to Midlothian Council and Transport Scotland in relation to the proposed car and cycle parking and access to the site, construction vehicle traffic arrangements/management and integration with an adjacent signalised junction on the A702 providing access to existing leisure facilities in the local area.

The site itself has a challenging topography and to produce an internal road layout in keeping with the surrounding woodland environment, vehicle turning capabilities had to go through extensive testing. This applies to construction vehicles as well as servicing vehicles once the site is operational. Meinhardt were able to provide a series of Swept Path Analysis drawings to provide design advice to the project architect and eventually to demonstrate the suitability of the final masterplan layout.
