My life at Meinhardt: graduate structural engineer Parth Halai on the company, his role and sustainable engineering

A passionate supporter of sustainability, 22 year-old Parth Halai has been a graduate structural engineer with Meinhardt UK for almost five months. Born in Kenya and raised in Lisbon, Parth moved to London in 2013 where he later studied Civil Engineering at City, University of London. He graduated with a First Class BEng Honours and following a short break, was offered the position at Meinhardt UK. Nearly half a year into his role, Parth reveals his feelings on how he has found the job, what it means to be an engineer and his ambition to create sustainable engineering solutions.

Working for Meinhardt UK

As a new graduate, many questions ran through my mind before I started work.

What is it going to be like working within engineering? Will I be able to adjust to the company culture and people? Do I have enough knowledge to be able to contribute to a project?

Yet straightaway, on my first day, I was met with support and inclusivity. From the moment I set foot in the door, the team welcomed me with open arms; immediately I was able to get to know people from various disciplines within the company and feel at ease.

After returning to normality from the pandemic it has been lovely to see everyone back in the office and the company still enables flexible working which enhances the work-life balance.

On the social front, Meinhardt has been brilliant. From Christmas parties and quiz nights to sports and hikes, the social events are great fun. This year, I have signed up for the 5.6km J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge alongside my colleagues. It’s an incredible opportunity to mingle, socialise and grow your network with people, but above all, to spread the company ethos.

Life as an engineer

Being an engineer has brought me great pride as well as good challenges.

On a personal level, the challenges have helped me grow and understand the significant impact we have on society, the environment, and the economy – three factors which are crucial in any engineering project.

As a part of Meinhardt’s sustainability team, I love working alongside other engineers to design structures efficiently – from RC structures to steel and timber. Liaising with multiple individuals working on the project is one of the many perks of being a part of this team as well as being able to participate in meetings and discussions.

In particular, one aspect of this occupation which I am eager to experience is that sense of accomplishment once a project has finished. At Meinhardt UK, the team celebrate and reflect upon their hard work with a lovely meal and drinks which I cannot wait to be a part of. Additionally, I will also be able to showcase the projects I have been involved in with my friends and family.

Sustainability and the future

As a company, we are working vigorously to reduce our carbon footprint across all our projects, from the early concept design phases to delivery. Meinhardt UK exudes a great sense of togetherness and sound change which are integral to our society.

Our ambition is to drive and spread this awareness throughout the industry whilst ensuring we adjust and improve engineering innovations to reach net-zero carbon in the future.

On an individual basis, I am aiming to work towards a Chartership. On top of increasing my competence and expertise within this field, I want to be a part of the change towards using more sustainable materials within construction.

With enough experience under my belt, I would also love to volunteer in a developing nation to help the people there and share my engineering knowledge to better the situation of others.
