Mechanical Design Manager - Buildings Business Unit

To support our continued growth and delivery of landmark projects, we are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Mechanical Design Manager to join our Buildings Business Unit in London, with opportunities for international project involvement.

Primary Responsibilities

Project Role

The Mechanical Design Manager will lead the mechanical engineering discipline across a range of UK and international building projects. You will manage the full design lifecycle, from concept to completion, ensuring innovative, sustainable, and coordinated mechanical systems are delivered to the highest standards. You will collaborate closely with other disciplines, clients, and global teams to deliver technically robust and commercially viable solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership
  • Lead the delivery of mechanical design packages from concept to construction across UK and international projects.
  • Ensure mechanical designs are innovative, sustainable, and compliant with relevant standards, regulations, and environmental goals.
  • Oversee production of design deliverables including HVAC, public health, and associated systems: drawings, specifications, reports, and calculations.
  • Ensure effective integration of mechanical systems with architectural and structural elements and other engineering disciplines.
Team and Resource Management
  • Allocate team resources appropriately to deliver projects on time and to budget.
  • Promote a collaborative, inclusive, and knowledge-sharing team culture.
Project Delivery
  • Oversee mechanical input throughout all project stages from concept design through to construction and commissioning.
  • Coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams, both in the UK and internationally.
  • Ensure compliance with internal QA/QC procedures and project management processes.
  • Contribute to cost planning, value engineering, and risk management.
Client and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Act as the key point of contact for mechanical design matters.
  • Attend client meetings, site visits, and technical workshops.
  • Deliver clear and concise technical communication and documentation.
  • Build and maintain strong client and stakeholder relationships, ensuring exceptional service delivery.
Innovation and Sustainability
  • Champion low-carbon, energy-efficient, and sustainable design practices.
  • Support Meinhardt’s digital design strategy, including BIM (Revit/Navisworks) and analytical tools.
  • Stay informed of industry advancements, smart technologies, and environmental legislation.
  • Contribute to development of internal design standards and innovation initiatives.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (MEng/BEng).
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards Chartership (IMechE or CIBSE preferred).
  • Minimum 8 to 10 years of experience in mechanical building services design.
  • Proven experience leading multi-disciplinary design teams on complex UK and international projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of UK building regulations and mechanical systems design standards (e.g., CIBSE, ASHRAE).
  • Proficiency in software such as AutoCAD, Revit, IES-VE, Hevacomp, and MS Office.
  • Experience in delivering projects using BIM and digital design tools.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally as required.
